Wateringbury School on Red Hill

Nick writes: "I've still not seen any pictures of anyone I was at school with between 1954-1959.  In view of this, please see attached a school picture of me at about 5 years old.  I've not attached this so that the world can see what a gorgeous chap I was (!) but in the hope that either it will jog memories or encourage others to send in their picture.  If enough people did we could have a "class of 1955" or something"

Front left is Bill Sharpe and next to him Wally Stiff, behind Wally is George Walters,
rear left is Bill Martin who I remember being known locally as the Gas Man.

Dail writes: I have just read your blog and noticed an email from Maria, the granddaughter of Bill Sharpe, and thought this photo might be of interest as Bill is in the photograph.

The photo was taken outside the Phoenix pub on Red Hill.

The man standing in the doorway on the right is John Weeks. The teenage girl is Brenda Baker, later Adams, sitting next to Brenda is her dad Freddy Baker. Bill Sharpe is sitting on the step on the far right.
Additionally I believe the man behind Brenda is Cyril Hammond and the man next to Bill second from the right, front row is Freddy Mace.

The Butchers Tonbridge Road

My Mums Uncle Fred repairing a gas pipe outside the Butchers in the Tonbridge road. The shop still looks similar today though no longer a shop.

Leneys Brewery Wateringbury May 1933

This is a photo of my Great, Great Grandfather Fredrick Latter (third from left) with Mr Randall to his immediate right, taken outside the paint shop at Leneys Brewery, May 1933 where they all worked. This was where the Inn Signs were all painted.

A Postcard sent from Wateringbury in 1909 from Annie.

Annie was the sister of Mr Edgar Clark-Smith, Headmaster of Wateringbury School, organist and Scoutmaster. Mr Clark-Smith, known to the boys as 'gaffer' is on the far right in the photo.

The group are standing outside the old Scout Hall which was situated on the Tonbridge Road between the old Kings Head at the corner of the crossroads and the entrance to the car lot, now demolished.

The above photo shows Diane Hayes (nee Shippey) uncle Bill Shepherd at Wateringbury Boys School in 1919. In those days the school was divided into boys only and girls only classes.

Bill is the last right on the second row.

Glebe Meadow Being Built

Phase two of Glebe Meadow being built around 1953 showing No 30 the ground floor flat that I moved into when I was seven (1960). In the background is the Hop Garden with hops at their full height suggesting this was taken late summer. The materials for this building were stored at the bottom of the road and when I moved in we called it the sand pit as there was a lot of sand left over and it was a brilliant play area.

I think this photo was taken from Dail's front garden at No 20 Glebe Meadow.

Wateringbury School Nativity Play 1968

My brother Brian Gilham is Joseph in this photo which was taken in the old school hall. When I was at the school, the nativity play always took place in the church.

The clock features again in this photo, is this now in the new school does anyone know?

The Scouts Hall is the one that used to be between the traffic lights
and the Garage which is still there and I believe used to be called Dukes.

The boy getting the presentation is Bernie (Bernard) Randall who cannot remember who is presenting, however the scoutmaster beside him is Bob Adams, first scout on the left is Dave Powis who was also in the Outcasts, next to him is Brian Waghorn, next to him is Barry Padgem, then Bernie thinks it's Ken Goodwin and Chris Smith, on far right is John Long and behind him is his farther Vic Long.
